David B LESHOCK (1999)

The knight of the werewolf: Bisclavret and the shape-shifting metaphor

Romance Quarterly, 46(3):155-65.

Interprets this work as a symbol of a very topical and specific situation in Marie de France's time. The dangerous position of the knight threatens to blur the distinction between animal and human behaviour in the social realm; like the menacing werewolf in the woods, the knight is capable of doing much harm and Marie's metaphor demonstrates the danger.
